Tap Into Free People's Bohemian Paris, With Help From Lou and Dree

We can't help but think Free People's October catalog has serendipitously arrived just in time for Paris Fashion Week.

We can't help but think Free People's October catalog has serendipitously arrived just in time for Paris Fashion Week. And we say this because once you take a closer look at its très chic contents within, you'll understand. Inside awaits a perfectly unkempt Lou Doillon — shot by Garance Doré, no less — hanging in her Parisian neighborhood (Bastille, in case you were wondering), styled up in a mix of classic stripes, high-waisted denim, and boho knits. Then, with just a blank NYC studio backdrop, photographer Chadwick Tyler snapped blond beauty Dree Hemingway in the season's coolest hippie-chic wares, all of which we now want. So, why exactly is this the perfect kind of Fashion Week coincidence? We're pretty sure Lou and Dree embody everything we love about that French brand's effortlessly cool style, the kind of style we're excited to spot outside the shows. Prep for Fall — plus PFW — right here, courtesy of Free People's latest.

Lou Doillon and Dree Hemingway Star in Free People's October Catalog

Free People assembled a trio of fashion's coolest women, including Garance Doré, Lou Doillon, and Dree Hemingway, for its colorful October catalog.
Lou Doillon and Dree Hemingway For Free People October 2012

Free People assembled a trio of fashion's coolest women, including Garance Doré, Lou Doillon, and Dree Hemingway, for its colorful October catalog.

While Hemingway posed for photographer Chadwick Tyler, Doré shot and interviewed Doillon in and around her home. "I like the idea of having a lot of things, and I like having houses that make people want to stay," Doillon says. The same idea extends to the Fall garments from Free People: chunky knitwear, cozy sweaters, lived-in boots, and soft denim are exactly the kinds of clothes necessary for Fall. A look at the catalog here in the gallery.

Those stories and more in our daily news roundup.

  • Marchesa will introduce its first fragrance, the seductively named Parfume d'Extase, at Sephora in September. The rock crystal-shaped bottle comes in two sizes that will retail between $60 and $85, and a roll-on version of the scent will sell for $25. [Elle]

  • Calvin Klein's ex-boyfriend Nick Gruber says the designer has been "supportive of my sobriety" and happily reports that he is "clean on drugs and alcohol." Klein sent Gruber to a rehab facility after he was arrested for cocaine possession in April. [The Cut]

  • Kirna Zabête's highly anticipated clothing line for The Shops at Target will be in stores on Sept. 9, but photos of the offering have appeared online. [FabSugar]

  • Gia Coppola is intent on making a name for herself as a fashion-film director. "It's cool because it’s a new way to show clothes and see how they move, plus you have a little story, so it adds personality," she says. "And it's helpful when companies are open to letting you do what you want." [WWD]

  • Lou Doillon's busy acting, modeling, and singing careers have meant that she hasn't "had a real love life," she says. "I've never had someone living with me in my house. I guess that would consume a lot of time." [WWD]

  • The recent economic downturn has pushed sales of clothing down and sales of accessories up — which has also meant an increase in the number of fashion students majoring in accessory design. [The New York Times]

  • For the first issue of Opening Ceremony's magazine OC Annual, Bruce Weber shot Gaia Repossi doing yoga in front of a bus. [Fashionista]

  • Jonathan Saunders has had a successful Olympic season: his clothing was featured in the games' opening ceremony, worn on the cover of British Vogue, and spotted on the back of Samantha Cameron, the wife of UK Prime Minister David Cameron. [Vogue UK]

  • Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, and Keira Knightley all donated shoes to be auctioned off for the Small Steps Project, which raises money to provide clothing and food for children who work in landfills. [Vogue UK]

Le Look du Jour: 24 Modern French Muses

"With French women you first see the woman and then you see the clothes," Carine Roitfeld has said when describing the essence of French style.
Modern French Style Icons

"With French women you first see the woman and then you see the clothes," Carine Roitfeld has said when describing the essence of French style. "It's more the way you mix the clothes and how you move, how you open your bag, how you cross your legs — just little things that make a difference."

Roitfeld makes it sound simple, but that perfect mix of irreverence, glamour, beauty, effortlessness, sex appeal, and slouch? Easier said than done. "It’s the fantasy of the entire world of women, even French women, to be the perfect Parisienne," Le Figaro columnist Bertrand de Saint Vincent explained recently in The New York Times.

Elusive, yes, but not impossible. Brigitte Bardot did it. Francoise Hardy and Jane Birkin, too. And while there's no denying the allure of those indelible dames, they're not the only ones. In honor of Bastille Day, check out 24 totally modern French femmes who somehow embody that certain je nais se quoi to a T.

Marni For H&M Event in LA

>> While the rest of us are still weeks away from getting our hands on the Marni for H&M collection, last night's pre-launch event in LA saw a bevy of high-profile guests already decked head-to-toe in the capsule's pieces. Sofia Coppola, Consuelo Castiglioni, and H&M creative director Margareta van den Bosch hosted the event, while guests Drew Barrymore, Winona Ryder, Milla Jovovich, and Lou Doillon were on-hand to celebrate — and sing the praises of — the collection. "I feel unique, I feel well-tailored. I feel like a rock n' roll Jackie O," Milla Jovovich, who wore a floral off-the-shoulder ensemble, exclaimed.

Also in attendance was the star of the collection's Coppola-directed campaign video, Imogen Poots, as well as Brian Ferry, who performed the campaign's theme song, Avalon. Get an inside peek at the event in the video — which also features a cameo by Mel Gibson — below, then click through the slideshow to see all the guests in their Marni-for-H&M-finest.
