All the Times There Was Serious Dress Drama at the Met Gala
Along with the excitement and glamour that come with getting dressed for the Met Gala, we imagine each star also feels a certain amount of fear. Not only is there the pressure of dressing on theme and being judged by Anna Wintour and the style elite, but mounting the museum's famed staircase is no small feat when you're outfitted in a sprawling ball gown or restrictive couture. Not to mention the fact that underneath the dress, each guest is also sporting a pair of heels, making the climb ever more treacherous.
Needless to say that the trek up the Met Gala stairs makes the few steps to the Oscars podium seem like a cakewalk (sorry, Jennifer Lawrence). So, with that in mind, we're paying homage to the style stars who've battled their hemlines and trains, sometimes with a little help from a friend, all in the name of fashion. Herein, 20 dress-drama-induced moments from Met Galas past.
Victoria Beckham had a lot of dress on her hands when she made her way up the Met Gala stairs in 2006.
Bee Shaffer's ball gown called for more than one attendant at the gala in 2008.
Only one step out the door and Renée Zellweger was already in need of a gown adjustment on her way to the 2010 event.
Jessica Alba did her own train wrangling at the ball in 2010.
Gwen Stefani could hardly take a single step without lifting the hem of her gown on the red carpet in 2010.
Rihanna was one misstep away from a train-wrecking disaster in her lacy Stella McCartney gown at the 2011 Met Gala.
Madonna stopped to right a precarious hem on her Stella McCartney gown at the 2011 Met Gala.
Jessica Alba wasn't about to take the stairs without adjusting her cascading Michael Kors gown in 2012.
Christina Ricci stopped to wrangle the giant bow on her Thakoon creation that threatened to trip her up in 2012.
Katie Holmes enlisted a little help to get her train just right on her Calvin Klein Collection gown at the 2013 Met Gala.
Forget getting down the red carpet — Karolina Kurkova could hardly get out of the car in her enormous Marchesa gown in 2014. In the words of Sex and the City's Anthony Marantino: like getting a "cream puff through a keyhole."
Karen Elson's ball gown in 2014 was maybe just too much dress for one person.
Same goes for Sarah Silverman, who didn't make getting around in this gown look easy in 2014.
Designer Tabitha Simmons's Dolce & Gabbana confection was made for turning heads but not so much for walking in 2014.
Sarah Jessica Parker was a one-woman wrangler show in her Oscar de la Renta gown in 2014.
Liu Wen couldn't exactly stroll into the event unassisted in 2014.
Stella McCartney got all tangled up in Rihanna's hemline in 2014.
That super-restricting Pucci gown Beyoncé wore in 2011 required two additional sets of hands to get her to the top of the staircase.
Rita Ora was basically telling her hemline to step aside as she tried to make her way down the red carpet in 2014 in this Donna Karen Atelier creation.
Unfortunately for Hayden Panettiere, that Dennis Basso gown got the best of her and she didn't avoid a slipup on the staircase in 2014.
