Dolce, Gabbana Wish Galliano Good Luck on Fashion Comeback

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have joined the chorus of voices backing John Galliano's return to working in the industry.

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana have joined the chorus of voices backing John Galliano's return to working in the industry.

"We wish John the best of luck with his return to fashion," the two said in a post on their online magazine Swide. "We've always been admirers of his flamboyant talent. He has been missed from the fashion scene these two years and we can't wait to see the collection with Oscar de la Renta."

Just last week, de la Renta shocked the fashion community when he announced that he would welcome Galliano, who was let go from his position at Dior for making anti-Semitic comments in 2010, at his studio for a three-week residency. "Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John," de la Renta said at the time. "I think that life is about forgiving and helping people."

Oscar de la Renta: Criticizing Michelle Obama "Was a Big Mistake"

Fashion critics are quick to point out that Michelle Obama, who wore a bevy of American designers during the recent inaugural celebrations, has never donned Oscar de la Renta.

Fashion critics are quick to point out that Michelle Obama, who wore a bevy of American designers during the recent inaugural celebrations, has never donned Oscar de la Renta. Could one of his comments on her style from nearly four years ago be the reason why?

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, de la Renta said that criticizing what Obama wore the first time she met Queen Elizabeth II "was a big mistake. I said lots of nice things, but then I said I didn't think Mrs. Obama should have worn a J.Crew sweater to go to Buckingham Palace. And that's the bit they used."

De la Renta made that comment in an April 2009 interview with WWD. But that's not to say he's never paid her a compliment. Around the same time as Buckingham Sweatergate, de la Renta said the first lady "has such great looks if she put on a potato sack, she would look great."

Is the World Ready to Forgive John Galliano?

Oscar de la Renta made headlines when he granted John Galliano a three-week residency at his New York design studio on Friday, effectively signaling Galliano's return to fashion. Will others in the industry — and in the world at large — welcome him back with open arms?

"I think John is doing all the right things," de la Renta said in an interview with WWD. "Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John. I think that life is about forgiving and helping people."

Forgiveness for the controversial anti-Semitic comments that got Galliano fired from Dior in March 2011 has been hard to come by, but that hasn't stopped boldfaced names from making public displays of support for the designer. The stylist Patricia Field dismissed the incident as nothing more than a farce. Kate Moss sent him back to work when she asked him to create her wedding dress last year. Grace Coddington acknowledged that his situation was "a tough one to get over" in an interview last month. "I love John; I think he's brilliant. He certainly intends to come back — when he's ready."

Coddington's boss Anna Wintour told WSJ. Magazine shortly after he was fired, "This is all so tragic." In April, she was reportedly spotted having lunch with him in Paris, and it's been suggested that she's behind his stay in de la Renta's studio.

"I said and did things which hurt others, especially members of the Jewish community," Galliano told WWD. "I remain committed to making amends to those I have hurt."

The question that remains is whether a wider community is ready to accept his apologies.

Golden Globe Awards: Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel continued her reign as the retro red-carpet queen in a dramatic red Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall '13 gown.

Zooey Deschanel continued her reign as the retro red-carpet queen in a dramatic red Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall '13 gown. The New Girl starlet chose a strapless number, complete with the most ladylike ball skirt to complement the fitted sweetheart-neckline bodice on top. To accent the classic crimson ensemble, she wore an oversize pearl necklace, matching pearl bracelet, and a chic ponytail. Of course, no Zooey appearance is complete without its cheeky manicure, and tonight's was no exception. Her film-roll-decorated nails are the perfect award-show decal, if you ask us. How did you think she did?

Anne Hathaway has been a bit of a red-carpet wild card this awards season — in that we never know what bold move she'll make next. But tonight's shimmery, spiral-textured, slinky, sexy slip dress by Oscar de la Renta is just another spot-on pick for the Les Misérables star. No extra frills necessary — her diamond wedding ring, diamond stud earrings, and Casadei gold vegan sandals were just enough — and we're loving the juxtaposition of her high-shine dress vs. low-key everything else. Anne's gorgeous pixie cut was effortlessly mussed up (but not overly messy, of course), and her megawatt smile was turned up on high. Seriously, what else do you need to complete this kind of golden look? Do you think Anne did right by this metallic dress?

Jessica Chastain Does Double the Glamour in Just One Night

It's only Tuesday, but Jessica Chastain's already supplied enough glamorous fashion fodder for the whole week.

It's only Tuesday, but Jessica Chastain's already supplied enough glamorous fashion fodder for the whole week. Her appearances on the Late Show With David Letterman and at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards last night drew out two lovely looks from the actress (who already wowed us with her enviable Winter coat collection). Now, it's clear the actress is revving up for award-season fashion — and we have a feeling that these two test runs are just the tip of the iceberg for the Zero Dark Thirty star. For her first trick, Jessica headed to the Late Show in a brilliant, cobalt-hued Antonio Berardi sheath. The curve-skimming sheath fits perfectly, and while the front of the dress is classically chic, the real wow factor is the exposed-zip and cutout back. For the finish, Jessica looked to a pair of ankle-strap heels, the perfect choice to play up the dress's sexier side.

Of course, that's just the beginning of Chastain's night — the style antics continued when the actress headed to the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, this time in a lacy Oscar de la Renta fit-and-flare confection from the label's Pre-Fall '13 collection. Switching gears, Jessica played to a more ladylike side with a feminine cut, frilly details, and a megawatt Queen by Harry Winston diamond collar necklace (totaling $1.3 million). She arrived in a classic black coat, and finished it off with a pair of peep-toe Louboutins for a sweet take on evening style. Now, it's time to cast your votes — which of Jessica's little dresses wowed you?

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2013 (Plus, Accessories!)

Oscar de la Renta's collections tend to run wide and deep, and his Pre-Fall 2013 offering is no different.

But what was different about this show was the designer's experimenting with a new silhouette: slightly high-waisted A-line skirts that stopped just below the calves. These were paired with jackets cut from the same cloth, or belted with shirts tucked in.

The rest of the collection featured all of de la Renta's customary treatments, but they were applied with a lighter hand. The jewels we saw decorating his Spring 2013 and Fall 2012 collections were restricted here to necklaces, brooches, and the crystals applied to a selection of evening gowns, and floral embellishments that are so much a part of his language were mostly confined to prints.

One pale blue dress cleverly used pink and blue paillettes to simulate blurry, pixelated roses. The model walked by as Marvin Gaye belted out the lyrics to "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," but we'd be just as happy with the roses on this dress as a bouquet of live blooms.

Hot Dogs and Hamburgers in Paradise: Cathy Horyn, Oscar de la Renta Resolve Fight

Cathy Horyn and Oscar de la Renta must have resolved the name-calling scuffle they had in September: the fashion critic was spotted front row at the designer's Pre-Fall 2013 show Monday night.

Cathy Horyn and Oscar de la Renta must have resolved the name-calling scuffle they had in September: the fashion critic was spotted front row at the designer's Pre-Fall 2013 show Monday night.

WWD reports that Horyn not only showed up at the show, but made a point of telling the brand's president, Alex Bolen, she was wearing one of the designer's dresses. We saw Bolen talking with Horyn before the show began; the two later walked toward backstage, where Horyn talked with the designer before the show.

"I told her we probably approach fashion in two different ways," de la Renta said. "I respect her way and I hope she respects my way. My vision of fashion is for my customers. I read every single article she writes on fashion. I never hold grudges."

In her review of de la Renta's Spring 2013 collection, Horyn called the designer a "hot dog." De la Renta responded with a full-page ad in WWD, asking "If you have the right to call me a hot dog why do I not have the right to call you a stale 3-day old hamburger?" Horyn later told us that she "used the term in a professional context, as someone showing off his tricks, like a surfer."
