Winter wardrobe sensibility and holiday dressing can sometimes be a little tricky. While it's more fun to throw on a sparkly New Year's Eve cocktail dress and forget the rest, it'll be hard to ignore the cold weather nipping away at your skin-baring attire. We'll follow the lead of these season-savvy celebs. They know how to top off their formal eveningwear with equally cool outerwear, and they do it with the most plush fabrics. From metallic satin to fur trim, we've got two words for you: luxe toppers. Rachel Roy warmed up in an oversized colorful floral-patterned cocoon jacket, Olivia Palermo adorned her shoulders with a gorgeous pink fur stole, and Miranda Kerr mixed a ladylike silhouette with a funkier graphic print on top. We've been quietly admiring these cutouts from afar, but it's time to dive right in to this skin-baring trend. The London premiere of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo not only gave us more reason to be excited for the movie's release stateside, but leading lady Rooney Mara also stunned in a white embroidered Givenchy couture gown. Thanks to the subtle yet sexy cutout details, she flashed just enough skin to add a seductive flair to her elegant look. Olivia Wilde donned a keyhole cutout-enhanced black dress, Nicky Hilton chose a bright turquoise dress complete with sleek darted cutouts, and Nicole Richie channeled her edgier side in a leather boxy cutout gown. Take a look at how each chic celeb interprets this peekaboo detail and then shop similar looks at the end of the slideshow!
It's official — the sparkliest, iciest, and boldest blue hues are heating up the red carpet. So instead of pulling out the trusty LBD for your next holiday soiree, we suggest you try out a shade of azure. Just look to these stunning stars for sea-colored styling tips. We're hooked on Emmy Rossum's electric blue long-sleeve minidress, Miley Cyrus's Grecian asymmetrical gown, and Freida Pinto's feminine sky blue ruffled confection. There's more where that came from — click through to see a bevy of celebs rocking their coolest versions of blue and shop similar looks at the end of the slideshow.
Mila went for red-hot Lanvin for the New York premiere of Friends With Benefits, but for the Russian debut, she took a soft approach in this white cocktail dress from Elie Saab couture. Her onscreen character may be a bit on the frisky side, but Mila looks positively ethereal and innocent here in this frothy confection, complete with headpiece. If there were a common denominator on last night's ESPY Awards red carpet, it was seriously sexy celebrities. Appearing in leg-baring hemlines, sequins, and brights, stars gathered at LA's Nokia Theatre to honor excellence in sports performance. We're admittedly most interested in what everyone was wearing — from Kerry Washington's sparkly Jenny Packham mini to Maria Sharapova's decadent little McQueen number, stars stepped up their game to hit the red carpet in top form. You know that fun, girly dress you love, the one you don't wear nearly enough because it needs to feel a little more polished, or maybe it needs to feel less dressy? The style answer to that conundrum is a blazer. It can elevate a beachy maxi dress just in time for a movie premiere, a la Sarah Jessica Parker in her Oscar de la Renta resort gown and Salvatore Ferragamo blazer, or it can downplay the frills of a gown or mini, as Emma Watson showed to great effect in London, and Charlize with a feathered minidress. Want to get the look? Click to shop similar outfits, or just look in your closet. Chances are you already own a sharp blazer, so simply introduce it to your most feminine dress for an ultra-modern style marriage.
Emma Watson's held us captive with her Harry Potter premiere looks — each time, stunning in yet another gown selection. For tonight's much-anticipated Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 premiere in NYC, the actress surprised in a Bottega Veneta Fall 2011 gown, complete with a frayed linen bustier and full, draped skirt. To complement, she selected Giuseppe peep-toe heels and delicate Lorraine Schwartz jewels, but went for full impact makeup with a sultry smoky eye, and slicked, side-parted hair. Last night's Oscars had some gorgeous accessories moments, and we're jonesing to get our hands on the stars' sparkling red-carpet earrings. Busy Philipps wore Irene Neuwirth earrings, and we found a smaller, less expensive (but still an investment) version. Reese Witherspoon wore Neil Lane emeralds, and we found these for under $100. Tassel earrings are a must thanks to Natalie Portman rocking a pair from Tiffany's; for Spring we like this version in turquoise. Finally, Gwyneth's Louis Vuitton multicolor seahorse earrings were so fun, we need a pair for ourselves, in the form of these peacocks ($48). Click to shop!
Jessica Biel looked flawlessly feminine in her pretty in pink Oscar de la Renta gown at the premiere of Valentine's Day. Her romantic ruffle wrap bodice was complimented by pale Christian Louboutin pumps, drop earrings, and a canary yellow cocktail ring from Stephen Russell. The only thing missing was a dozen red roses and hot arm candy Justin Timberlake!
