I love it when designers have kids of their own because motherhood inspires them to create lil versions of their favorite pieces. The latest designer to join this bandwagon is Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss, the woman behind the Shoshanna label of swimwear and dresses for busty women. Gruss has teamed up with classic children's apparel store Best & Co. to launch a swimwear collection just in time for the 2009 resort season. With traditional nautical and Summer prints inspired by New England vacation destinations, the nine piece line for boys and girls is likely to catch the eyes of Gruss' adult fans.
Coterie Tradeshow Contemporary Clothing Spring 2009
On Tuesday we visited Coterie's eveningwear selections for fresh runway looks but most of the action was taking place in the contemporary market over on the Piers. Buyers worked themselves into a frenzy over collections from Tracey Reese, Velvet, Geren Ford, Inhabit, Shin Choi, Marc Bouer Glamit, Cynthia Steffe, Twinkle, Betsy Johnson, Harlan Bel, Nieves Lavi, Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, Anna Sui, Nanette Lepore, Citizens of Humanity, Seven for All Mankind, Foley and Corinna, Julie Haus, Erotokritos, Nicole Miller, Vera Wang Lavender, Tibi, Shoshanna, Alice and Olivia, Rag and Bone, Diane Von Furstenberg, Earnest Sewn, Adam by Adam Lippes, Diesel, Milly by Michelle Smith, Helmut Lang, Iodice, and Sunner.
On Our Radar: Shoshanna and Charlotte Ronson Make a Splash
High school friends Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss and Charlotte Ronson are taking their friendship to another level. The two designers are coming together to create a beachwear collection named Made With Love. “Charlotte sells my swim line in her store and I always thought it would be cute to do some of her prints on the swim,” said Shoshanna.
The duo have designed colorful bikinis and coordinating cover-ups, like the floral printed halter bikini and matching tunic pictured. In addition to selling in Ronson's stores, the pieces will start at $31 wholesale for a bikini bottom to $100 for a towel, and will be found at high-end department stores and boutiques.

Fab Flash: All-Star Designer Trio Creates Supergirl Collection
Supergirl is getting a banging new look. In conjunction with Warner Bros., childhood friend designers Shoshanna Lonstein Gruss, Alice Roi, and Laura Poretzky, are teaming up to create a resort collection under the Supergirl brand. Roi, who's known for her edgy signature line; Lonstein Gruss, contemporary designer for Shoshanna; and Poretzky, owner and designer of Abaeté, will be fusing their talents together into one collection.
“When we were creating the line, we talked a lot about how we would wear it. We all worked to push each other into new directions, which helps us a lot when it comes to our own collections. Laura and I never thought we would be putting Alice’s metal studs on a dress, but mixing those things worked well in the end,” said Lonstein Gruss.
The 35-piece collection, showing at the MAGIC show in Las Vegas next month, will include dresses, tops, jeans, and jackets wholesaling between $23 to $193.

Life's a Beach: Bandeau Babe

If you're like me and cringe at the idea of tan lines, I suggest you join the bandeau babe club. True, you can't frolic through the waves in one of these — if you must, I suggest getting one with a removable halter strap — but also true, this style suit is retro active. Many celebs have been favoring the cool strapless vibe of a bandeau, see Drew and her beau giggling in the waves. Drew, who is a member of the club, proves the bandeau to be bodacious.
Celebrity Style: Jennifer Lopez
New parents Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony left their little ones behind and enjoyed a romantic date at the Waverly Inn in NYC. Jennifer made sure we zoomed in on her toned, tan limbs by covering up on top and sporting a yellow mini dress and studded Mary Jane Loubs. Her postbaby bod is definitely smokin', but I'm thinking it will be a while until we see Jennifer in a body-con dress again. The white and gold accessories, and her ear-to-ear smile, are the perfect ending to this sunny story.

Celebrity Style: Lake Bell
Actress Lake Bell attended a party hosted by Eva Longoria looking understated but still radiant. She belted her paisley Shoshanna dress to show off her waist and gave the look a splash of color with a red clutch. I'm going to continue watching Lake . . . she has all the attributes for a style star!

Trend Alert: Watercolor Ways

For a less in-your-face approach to the overarching artsy trend than straight up brush strokes, there are watercolor ways. Delicate, ethereal, but still crafty, pastel and vibrant hues have formed together to create beauties like Rachel Bilson's Zac Posen. I'm torn — I love the boldness of brush strokes but the mystique of watercolor ways. Guess I'll have to give both a go!
Celebrity Style: Mischa Barton
If I had to guess, I'd say Mischa Barton's favorite decade is the '70s. The actress, who was shopping for magazines, went back to her roots in a strapless floral dress, denim vest, and yellow sandals. I guess her recent fashion faux pas was a momentary lapse in fashion judgment. I'm glad the old Mischa is back . . . let's hope she stays this way!
