Our Favorite Velvet Pieces — and How to Wear Them

Velvet: you either love it or you hate it.

Velvet: you either love it or you hate it. We, of course, love the luxe seasonal trend seen on Fall runways from designers like Proenza Schouler — check out those amazing pants — Nina Ricci, Mary Katrantzou, and Marc Jacobs to name a few. Pair it with wool blazers and sweaters for an extra textural ensemble, or go casual and wear it with denim jeans or a chambray top for a cool off-duty look. That said, we culled our velvet favorite picks for you to add to your wardrobe in the slideshow. Also, check out our quick styling tips below on how to wear the trend.

  • Balance out a velvet top or pant with tailored pieces, like a wool blazer or trousers, for a polished appeal.
  • A little velvet can go a long way. If you're shy to wearing the trend, try out the trend via a bag or pumps.
  • Treat a pair of velvet pants or leggings like a pair of jeans during the Winter. They're super cozy and add the perfect twist to any ensemble.

Get the Look: J.Crew's "Gone Hollywood" Photo Shoot

If you haven't taken a look at the fun photos that comprise the new J.Crew "Gone Hollywood" lookbook, go take a peek.

If you haven't taken a look at the fun photos that comprise the new J.Crew "Gone Hollywood" lookbook, go take a peek. There's a really fun, California spirit to the shoot, and it doesn't hurt that the male model is actually Sam Page, who you may remember from episodes of Mad Men and Gossip Girl. One of my favorite pages from the photo shoot is the bedroom, and luckily, you can easily get the look. Start with a tufted, velvet headboard in a rich goldenrod hue — the Urban Outfitters Velvet Tufted Headboard ($350) in antique gold is a close match. Layer the bed with lots of high thread count white cotton linens, luxurious, high loft down pillows, and a few choice throw pillows, and voilà! You can almost pretend that you're in the middle of a "Gone Hollywood" adventure, though it's up to you to provide the wardrobe and the script pages to toss. Trend Alert: The Cool Chick Turtleneck

Who says a turtleneck has to be stuffy?

Who says a turtleneck has to be stuffy? Certainly not model Jessica Stam, whose cool chick turtleneck is proof that pulling off this wintery look is all in the styling. To keep things from becoming too bulky, just pick a lighter fabric, even sheer if you please. As for the rest of your ensemble, try a mini or tap shorts and tights, and if you're going to do denim, go skinny and sexy to keep up the cool vibe — customizable Prada shades are optional but always encouraged.

Celeb Style: Camila Alves

There's more than one way to wear an LBD — and this one's hot.

There's more than one way to wear an LBD — and this one's hot. Camila Alves's dress may be short and to the point, but a pair of open-toe booties and aviator shades ($20) give it a little edge. I'd finish with a pair of glam earrings and a studded clutch ($130, originally $228) just to up the rocker-chic appeal. Click the items above to shop a similar style.
