Carrie Underwood Has 4 Tattoos — Here's What They Mean

Since Carrie Underwood shot to fame after winning season four of "American Idol" in 2005, the singer has released nine studio albums, garnered critical acclaim, and earned many career-defining accolades, including eight Grammys. Still, while you might be well-versed with her many hits over the years, what you might not be as familiar with is her small collection of tattoos, which recently expanded when she added a matching sentimental piece with her mother and sisters.

On July 2, Underwood shared a carousel of snaps on her Instagram that documented her recent family trip to the Las Vegas-based tattooist Darek Riley. "When your 74-year-old mother asks you and your sisters to get matching tattoos with her in Vegas, the only questions are, 'what?' and 'where?'" the country music superstar captioned the gallery, adding, "I never would've thought I'd see the day that Mama Carole would be gettin' some ink!" The women each got a matching heart outline with a small elongated loop at the end to commemorate their time in Las Vegas.

And while this might be the most visible body artwork you'll see on Underwood, that's not the only design she has. Earlier this year in May, she also added a flower tattoo to her arm during a girls' trip, and she has two other tattoos that are well-concealed in obscure locations.

Given their discreet placement, we wouldn't blame you if you, too, thought the "American Idol" alum didn't have any ink to her name before these latest additions. That's why we're breaking down Underwood's sentimental (and small) tattoo collection ahead, which features her lesser-known pieces and what each one means.

The Underwood women — including Carrie; her sisters, Shanna and Stephanie; and their mother, Carole — got matching heart outline tattoos during their recent trip to Las Vegas, where the singer will resume her Vegas residency at the Resorts World Theatre in September. While the star's sisters and mother decided to get their pieces of ink on the inside of their wrists, the Grammy winner opted for hers to go on top of her right foot.

During a girls' trip with her sisters-in-law to Florida, Underwood added a fine-ink daisy design to the inside of her left forearm, near the elbow fold. The ink features a microrealistic daisy flower with delicate petals, yellow-colored stamen, and two tiny leaves sprouting from its short stem. While the singer opted for a daisy, her friends chose different pieces, including a tiny white-inked star, a flock of birds, and flowers. "From the beach to the tattoo parlor, Destin didn't know what hit it! I love you ladies!!!" she wrote alongside pictures from the getaway, which included a close-up of her newly minted ink.

Carrie Underwood's Hip Tattoo

The singer has a tiny four-leaf clover tattoo in green ink near her lower abdomen. Due to its obscure location, the tattoo is barely visible in her pictures, barring low-rise-bottom wear, which allows a peek at the design. She opened up about the ink in a 2013 interview with Redbook magazine. "I was in college and got them done. They don't mean anything," she told the publication at the time.

She has since poked fun at her impromptu ink. "Ahhh, #StPatricksDay - The only day of the year my four-leaf clover tattoo makes any sense!" she wrote in a May 17, 2016, tweet. "There's a lesson here, kids: #ThinkBeforeYouInk." However, in a 2020 story with People, she updated readers on the tattoo's status after the birth of her son Isaiah Michael with husband Mike Fisher. The couple welcomed their firstborn in 2015 via a C-section, which has reportedly altered the shape of the four-leaf clover tattoo. "It's not really a four-leaf clover anymore, it's a multi-leaf," she told the outlet. "It doesn't match up with the top! And I think most people deal with this after a C-section, there's like a little pooch over the scar. It's something that I'm probably going to have forever."

Carrie Underwood's Lower-Back Tattoo

Another one of her early tattoos includes a tiny black-inked cat on her lower back, placed above her left buttocks. She admitted in the same interview with Redbook that she got the design on a whim, so it doesn't hold much significance.
