A Closer Look at Zoey Deutch's 8 Known Tattoos

  • Zoey Deutch has eight known tattoos so far.
  • Two of those pieces of ink are dedicated to her rescue dog.
  • Each design is placed on either her ankles, legs, or feet for professional reasons.

Ever since making a memorable cameo in the Disney sitcom "The Suite Life on Deck" in 2010, Zoey Deutch has been steadily building a robust résumé that showcases her versatility as an actor. The year 2022, in particular, was a successful one for the star thanks to her critically acclaimed feature films, crime-thriller "The Outfit" and the satirical dark comedy "Not Okay." This month, she's ending the year with a bang with the feel-good holiday rom-com, "Something From Tiffany's," which she coproduced alongside Reese Witherspoon's woman-centric production company Hello Sunshine.

In addition to the onslaught of projects she's had her hands in, the actor has also been accumulating other works of art over the years in real life with her tattoos. During a recent appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Deutch shared that she got her first piece of ink at the age of 20 and has since added more designs to her collection every year. She also offered the reasoning behind most of her tattoo placements, which are all located below the knee. "Every year for my birthday, I like to get a tattoo; that's my present to myself, but I do it ankle down," she said. "It's ankle down, so that, you know, when I'm working and on set, I don't have to spend a lot of time covering them up."

From her zodiac symbol tattoo to the designs that solidify her proud pet parent status, keep reading for a breakdown of all of Deutch's eight known tattoos so far, along with the inspiration behind them.

Zoey Deutch’s Dog Portrait Tattoo

Deutch has a portrait of her dog's face inked on her calf directly above her right ankle, designed by LA-based celebrity tattoo artist Dr. Woo. Her pup, which goes by two names — Maybelle and Danielle — is a pit bull that she adopted from Los Angeles East Valley animal shelter in 2015. During a 2018 appearance on "The Late Late Show with James Corden," the star joked about the artwork placement. "Can I ask you an honest question? Is it 'aww,' or is it truly psycho that I got a portrait of my dog on a very exposed part of my body?" she joked with the host.

Zoey Deutch’s “Maybelle” Tattoo

On her left ankle, Deutch has her dog's name, "MAYBELLE," tattooed in block letters. While discussing her pup portrait with host Corden, Deutch also opened up about the inspiration behind the piece of ink, which she got in 2016. "Her name is Maybelle. She's also named Danielle. She has two names. I have two water balls; she can decide if she wants to be a Maybelle or Danielle, depending on the day. I have 'Maybelle' tattooed on the other side of my ankle, so, just in case, if I forget what she looks like or what her name is, I just look right down at my foot, and I know exactly what my dog is and what her name is, so that's the good thing," she said.

In November of 2016, Deutch got a scorpion design etched on the inside of her right ankle. While she has not shared the meaning behind the symbol, many fans have speculated it's a nod to her zodiac sign. (She was born on Nov. 10, which makes her a Scorpio.)

Zoey Deutch’s Matzah Ball Soup Tattoo

In 2020, Deutch got a detailed matzah ball soup inked on her inner right ankle. While at first glance it might seem like a tribute to the actor's Jewish roots, the actor disclosed the meaning (as well as the hilarious mishap) behind the interesting piece during her latest sit-down chat with Jimmy Kimmel. "A couple of years ago, I was really into soups, and I got a matzah ball soup tattooed on my ankle," she said.

While emphasizing that she doesn't regret the ink, Deutch then offered a window into the unforeseen problem she noticed only after getting the tattoo. "I will always love soup, so I don't regret it for a second, but I wanted it to be steaming hot soup instead of lukewarm soup because who likes lukewarm soup? No one. And the steam just sort of looks like hair." Deutch also shared her mother and actress Lea Thompson's first reaction to seeing the design, "My mom was like, "Oh, that makes sense that you got that because when I was in labor with you, I had Greenblatt's matzah ball soup."
