This Is the Reason Selena Gomez Didn't Want "Same Old Love" to Be Her First Single

Selena Gomez looks gorgeous on the cover of Vogue Australia's September issue, and in the magazine, the singer gets refreshingly candid about her Revival album and what it's like having her personal life played out in the public eye. She also reveals why she chose to make "Good For You" the first single off of the album instead of "Same Old Love," which is what the studio originally wanted. Check out the interview's highlights below, before the magazine hits stands on Aug. 15.

  • On her Revival album: "I think it was just a step in the right direction, and I'm so proud of it. Once I tested the waters I was like, 'Okay, I'm building myself up and I've got to write this album, it's all me.' When it comes to music, all I wanted to do was make sure I was being authentic and being myself, and I took that chance with this album. I think it changed a lot of people's perspective, but I'm sure it is something that still lingers . . . that questioning my ability to do what I love."
  • On her decision to release "Good For You" as the first single off of Revival instead of "Same Old Love," which was what the studio originally wanted: "I was so adamant that I didn't want that to be my story. "Same Old Love" is so obvious in what it's about, it's a cycle of a very vicious relationship. Even though that is such a huge narrative of my life, I felt confident with "Good For You" [being the first single], and then it ["Same Old Love"] could be like . . . 'I'm pissed and this is exhausting.' I think any girl would feel that."

  • On her personal life being public: "For a while my private life was the most talked about thing. Nobody really knows everything and they can only assume. You want to do what you love, but all this other stuff overshadows it, so it makes it a little harder for people to take me seriously. I figured it's just temporary. I feel like that fortunately, and unfortunately, it's where my life is at the moment and I have to accept it."
