Karen Walker Spring 2013

For Spring 2013, Karen Walker's running theme was outer space.
Karen Walker Spring 2013 | Runway

For Spring 2013, Karen Walker's running theme was outer space. While that may sound a little more techy geek than usual for Walker, never fear. This play on the intergalactic came by way of the '50s and '60s, when, you know, people thought that we'd be whizzing around in jet packs and rocket shoes by now. It's actually pretty sweet to think about.

Thus, these were clothes that came infused with brightness, yes, but also a bit of nostalgia. Silhouettes were midcentury and sweet, with bell sleeves, ruffles, and prim little collars, while planetary prints, metallic-coated leather, and floating layers of organza hinted at celestial travels. But despite this collection's focus on a retro notion of the future, it still managed to feel thoroughly rooted in today.

Karen Walker Spring 2013

With Karen Walker, you know you're always in for a dose of quirk, and for Spring 2013, her designs took us on a time-traveling Space Age trip.

With Karen Walker, you know you're always in for a dose of quirk, and for Spring 2013, her designs took us on a time-traveling Space Age trip. Or, as the program notes, it's a collection of "1950s optimism blended with all things celestial." Translation: playful galactic prints were sent out via retro shapes (high-waisted, wide-leg trousers; cropped trapeze jackets; and sunny shiftdresses), giving each outfit a cheeky duality of past vs. future. Rihanna's Street Chic: Pink Pleated Skirt, Lace Bandeau, and Converse

Rihanna is no stranger to fashion-forward styles, but the singer really turned heads while shopping in NYC when she worked a soft pink American Apparel lace bandeau top ($18), a pink pleated Topshop skirt, black high-top Converse ($50), and a mini Céline tote.

Rihanna is no stranger to fashion-forward styles, but the singer really turned heads while shopping in NYC when she worked a soft pink American Apparel lace bandeau top ($18), a pink pleated Topshop skirt, black high-top Converse ($50), and a mini Céline tote. The midriff-baring starlet accessorized her ballet-meets-street style with oversized round Karen Walker shades ($250), a few necklaces, and diamond stud earrings, then layered on a two-tone sweatshirt. Style Rihanna's exact top, shoes, and shades with a flirty pleated skirt and laid-back hoodie to re-create this daring look.

Casual maxi dresses are a Spring and Summer staple, but we love how Gwen Stefani dressed up her black-and-white maxi while heading to a birthday party in LA over the weekend. How did she do so? The style chameleon accessorized her two-tone look with a standout stud collar necklace, chunky ankle-strap sandals, badass Karen Walker shades, and a vibrant red-orange nail polish for a pop of color. >> Spring party season is in full swing, bringing New York's fash pack out in droves. On Thursday, Ferragamo feted the reopening of its gorgeous 5th Avenue flagship by inviting Solange Knowles — divine in head-to-toe Ferragamo, of course— to spin records for a well-heeled crowd that included Sarah Reynolds, Lauren Remington Platt, and Genevieve Jones.

Across the street, Cartier celebrated the opening of its "Cartier & Aldo Cipullo, New York City in the '70s" exhibit with a glam soiree that saw the likes of Arizona Muse, Lily Collins, and Charlotte Casiraghi. Later that evening, the party continued downtown, where Leigh Lezark (left) kept the crowd — which included Chanel Iman and Karlie Kloss, both in Cushnie et Ochs — dancing all night long.

See pics from those events — plus, knockout looks from Amanda Brooks, Crystal Renn, Coco Rocha, Karen Walker, and more at a bevy of other occasions — here, in our best-of-the-week slideshow.
