V Magazine Winter 2011

>> V magazine collaborated with Carine Roitfeld on its first model covers in two years. The issue, on newsstands Nov. 8, featured four covers with two models apiece, styled by Roitfeld and photographed by Terry Richardson: Candice Swanepoel and Joan Smalls; Daphne Groeneveld and Saskia de Brauw; Sui He and Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, and Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Lindsey Wixson.

“It’s a big moment of change in fashion. In some cases, you feel like it’s the end of an era. I have been feeling this with cover subjects, and especially models,” Roitfeld explained. “These eight girls are unique, not one is like the other. Candice is the only blonde and blue-eyed of this new generation of supermodels. Joan is black, Sui He is Asian, Hanaa is North African. It’s their diversity that makes each of them, to me, truly modern. They bring a new energy to fashion.” The magazine plans to celebrate the issue on Sunday with a Halloween party at the gay nightclub Escuelita, hosted by Richardson, Swanepoel, Smalls, Northwood-Blyth and He.

>> After five consecutive Chanel campaigns — ending with the Fall 2011 set styled by Carine Roitfeld — it sounds like Freja Beha Erichsen's reign has come to an end. Roitfeld and Karl Lagerfeld reteamed over the weekend at the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, where Lagerfeld shot Saskia de Brauw and Joan Smalls for the Spring 2012 Chanel ads, which are “all about athletics and the sea. . . . It’s very modern sportif and in black and white,” according to the designer. He is now headed to Rome to shoot Fendi's Spring 2012 campaign with Arizona Muse, who will pose on the city's streets at dawn and dusk. She replaces Anja Rubik, who has been the face of Fendi for the past four seasons. [WWD]

Carine Roitfeld on the Vision For Her New Magazine, Emmanuelle Alt's Paris Vogue

>> Carine Roitfeld has confirmed that she's working on a new magazine, and hints that the imagery may be different than the vampy irreverence she was associated with at Vogue Paris: "I will always be irreverent in my own way, but I will try to use new approaches. I've used a lot of cigarettes, a lot of sexy pictures, a lot of naked girls. I will try to do something totally different now, because I don't want to get bored of myself or to bore my readers. So, if I learn something new today, I will use it. I have to reinvent myself." She continues: "I want to see a link between the catwalk and reality. It's difficult for the woman to understand how to wear the clothes she is seeing on the catwalk. Maybe I can find a new way of thinking and a totally different way to express myself."

When asked what she thinks of Vogue Paris under Emmanuelle Alt, meanwhile, Roitfeld is dismissive: "I am very happy with what is happening to me today. I am focusing on the future, new challenges, and projects. I am not really looking to the past or what others are doing."

Carine Roitfeld Irreverent Party

No, it's not Halloween quite yet, but last night Carine Roitfeld's book party gave good cause for her fashionable friends to suit up in appropriately dark costumewear. In honor of the book, aptly titled Irreverent, Paris Fashion Week's style crowd gathered in a slew of velvet, Gothic gowns, ghoulishly deep eye makeup that went far beyond the smoky eye, and an array of tongue-and-cheek apparel that humored Roitfeld's theme perfectly. With Halloween right around the corner, we're feeling particularly inspired by the decadently devilish looks. Some played it safer than others — Kanye, we're looking at you — but Carine, Ciara, Anja Rubik, and lots more embraced the call to otherworldly glamour with capes, crimson lips, and in some cases, a hint of (fake) blood. Click through to get inspired for your own spooky Halloween wear, and tell us your pick for the night's most fabulously irreverent.

Anna Dello Russo wore a huge, red-feathered Stephen Jones For Giles swan on her head; Roitfeld, Miranda Kerr, and Anja Rubik donned extra-heavy kohl; and Karlie Kloss bared skin in her slashed Anthony Vaccarello dress. Vamps, too, were out in full force: Abbey Lee Kershaw and Olivier Theyskens brought out their fangs while Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld and Riccardo Tisci bloodied their mouths. Carine Roitfeld Plans to Launch a Magazine Next September

>> Carine Roitfeld has been hinting a lot at her next big project, but now she confirms (translated from French): "It will be a magazine."

>> Carine Roitfeld has been hinting a lot at her next big project, but now she confirms (translated from French): "It will be a magazine." She continues: "I would love to do four times a year. Initially, I wanted it on the Internet, but it's a lot of investment, a lot of time, I do not know if it suits me. I know that now you have to work with the Internet, and the photos are of very good quality on the iPad, but things quickly go out of style on the Internet. We'll start with print. A September issue next Fall, in English."

Roitfeld told Dazed Digital of the magazine last week: "It will be something less frequent than a monthly to make it more iconic, more collectible. I want to make something really beautiful, chic, different. . . . I have to find a new way, so I am dreaming about it and working it out."

She also recently hinted at who she might be working with: "I have a lot to say about fashion, not just about fashion but beauty, art. I'm looking for a new way to talk to readers. We make the dream team — Marie-Amelie Sauve, [Mario] Testino, Stephen Gan."

As for whether she has a name for the magazine: "Yes. I cannot tell you, I'm trying to see if it's not already filed, but I think it suits me, it's pretty rock and roll. I could call it Carine Roitfeld in the manner of Oprah Winfrey, and put myself on the cover every month like she does, but I'm not sure if this is what people want. At the moment, they see me a lot, I'll even do a signing [of her new book, Irreverent] at Colette and it amuses me, but after I want to disappear."

And how she envisions the magazine: "I do not want to compete with Vogue. Besides, I'm not sure they see me coming from a very good eye. It will not be easy for me to run independently. It's a little earthen pot against the iron pot. But I still have friends willing to support me. I would like to succeed in mixing a lot of people very different, as for a dinner."

She continues: “Look. I understand their point of view [at Dior]. I understand they couldn’t just say, ‘Bad boy! We forgive you! Come back!’ But it’s really a pity. And I will never believe he believed what he said. I think he was drunk and alone in a bar. When people go crazy, they go crazy. It’s a human case, it’s not political or religious. He didn’t kill anyone!”

She also gives an opinion on her former Vogue colleague Carine Roitfeld, who she says was “very good at building up her own image.” Sozzani suggests that Roitfeld forgot she worked for Conde Nast and became too interested in having her picture taken. “I’m not a celebrity, I’m an editor,” Sozzani says. “If you feel that to be the editor of Vogue you have to be a celebrity, something is wrong in your life.”

>> In celebration of "Carine's World," the Fall 2011 campaign Barneys did in collaboration with Carine Roitfeld, the retailer hosted the stylist's nearest and dearest at Westway, the converted former strip club space in downtown New York.

Guests like Alexander Wang — who stopped by before his own party around the corner, Terry Richardson, and Karlie Kloss enjoyed Roitfeld's favorite drink, Testarossas, and the bounty of the taco truck she requested be stationed outside; there were even rumors of a Kate Moss appearance (although that never came to fruition).

As the party revved up, Roitfeld took the platform for a karaoke rendition of George Michael's "Careless Whisper"; Simon Doonan followed with "Nasty Girl." Later, Roitfeld followed up with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain." And when Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti arrived later on, Valentino got on stage to sing "Unforgettable," doing "My Way" for an encore.
