The Low-Heel Revolution Is On — and Burberry Is the Latest Convert

There's a low-heel revolution underway, and if you need proof of its burgeoning takeover, then just look to the Fall '13 runways (Victoria Beckham, Proenza Schouler, Sophie Theallet, and Diesel Black Gold among them), the street-style set, and the 28 pairs worth shopping now for reinforcement.

Of course, as if that isn't enough, today's Burberry collection certainly drives the point home: a low heel can be as chic as the highest stiletto. Christopher Bailey's latest included classic heritage pieces, along with exaggerated prints, and tougher grommet textures — all styled with leopard-print kitten wedges (pictured below).

In effect, it's a bit of a Marie Antoinette setup — you can have your cake and eat it too — courtesy of the kind of cool-girl heels that are being offered up in lower heights. Sophistication without the pain of four-inch heels? No argument here. From the Burberry kitten wedge (so subtle) to a more regal-looking Elizabeth and James mule to Valentino's current rock-studded ankle-strap sandals, there's a low-heeled look for every style personality. And while we here at POPSUGAR love ourselves a killer heel, we couldn't be more pleased with the current change of pace. What's your stance on the low-heel revolution?

Burberry Fall 2013 Runway

Christopher Bailey had us at the heart prints that dotted trench coats and dresses coming down the runway for Burberry Fall '13.
Burberry Runway | Fashion Week Fall 2013 Photos

Christopher Bailey had us at the heart prints that dotted trench coats and dresses coming down the runway for Burberry Fall '13. It was a skilled nod to the label's heritage — coats, leather, pencil skirts — all served up with Bailey's modern interpretation: high-impact pieces that incite interest without ever losing sight of what women want to wear. In this lineup, we got more sweetness, but there was a slicker, tougher counter to all those hearts, too — texture took shape as studded gromets sewn into the fringe that covered leather skirts and handbags — and among the standouts, there were the luxe leopard-print coats begging to be scooped up by Kate Moss or Alexa Chung.

Christopher Bailey Tells the Naked Truth About Donna Karan

Burberry's Christopher Bailey gave a brief history of his career when he delivered the keynote address at Tuesday's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, which he said started with Donna Karan taking off her clothes.

Burberry's Christopher Bailey gave a brief history of his career when he delivered the keynote address at Tuesday's CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, which he said started with Donna Karan taking off her clothes.

Bailey was a student at London's Royal College of Art when he first met Karan, who eventually hired him as a womenswear designer. But their first encounter would likely send any human resources staffer into fits of rage.

"She completely seduced me with the way she sees the world," Bailey said. "She stripped naked within about three minutes of meeting, and tried on all my things. That was one of my first big wake up calls to how nutty — and how brilliant — this industry is. . . So I went to work for Donna after I left and it got even more ridiculous. We would be working very, very late. At 3 am there would be a masseur coming around to give you a massage. That's weird. Then at 4 am we'd all sit in a little circle and we'd chat over the fabrics. That was weird to me too. And then at five o'clock Demi Moore would come in for a fitting."

Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013

This season, Christopher Bailey's never-ending quest for inspiration via the Burberry archives yielded a century-old image of capes and, believe it or not, corsets.
Burberry Prorsum Spring 2013 | Runway

This season, Christopher Bailey's never-ending quest for inspiration via the Burberry archives yielded a century-old image of capes and, believe it or not, corsets. The result was a sassy lineup that referenced both — and it came slickly packaged in an array of high-shine, candy-colored hues.

The label's signature trench coat was reimagined in sateen, lace, leather, metallic, and plastic, while bright berry, kelly green, electric blue, and fiery copper gave the collection a playful edge. Standout pieces were dresses and coats cut in corset-like silhouettes; with the addition of boning, they felt sexy and fresh.

Burberry Resort 2013 Pictures

Wearable, well-tailored clothing in rich colors made up the bulk of Christopher Bailey's Resort 2013 collection for Burberry. "We played with textures and prints and wove trench references, sartorial detailing and these little hints of corsetry throughout the evening dresses, suiting and our iconic outerwear," Christopher Bailey, Burberry's chief creative officer explained. To that end, women's trousers feature paper-bag waists and pleating, and the shapes and variations on the house's functional knitwear have an updated spin. The same can be said of the men's selection, which features lightweight suits, seersucker pants, and cotton poplin shirts. But it's the color palette of the collection — which ranges from metallic gold and dusty rose for ladies to royal blue and rich olive for the boys — that give the collection a luxurious depth and feel.
