While it's not exactly a look you'd likely wear out, perhaps you can find some sort of inspiration in Gareth Pugh's latest collection. For the designer's 2011 Fall Paris Fashion Week show, makeup artist Alex Box created a palette that C-3PO-, sci-fi-, and avant-garde-lovers everywhere are sure to love. For the pièce de résistance, otherwise known as the mesmerizing metallic plates molded around the eyes, retroreflective gold or blue fabric pieces (that actually turned bright white against flashes of light) were cut out and glued on to the skin.

Then, to complete the futuristic-looking theme, just a touch of Studio Sculpt Foundation ($30) was used on the complexion, Clear Lipglass ($15) was dabbed on the cheekbones, and Lip Conditioner ($15) gave a touch of hydration to the models' lips.

Despite Many Rumors Otherwise, Gareth Pugh Says He's Never Been Asked to Head Up Another Design House

>> In the past year, Gareth Pugh has been rumored to be taking jobs at both Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler.

>> In the past year, Gareth Pugh has been rumored to be taking jobs at both Alexander McQueen and Thierry Mugler. Obviously neither of those worked out — Sarah Burton is now in place at McQueen, and Nicola Formichetti has filled in at Mugler — but when it comes to an opportunity at another label, Pugh says: "I would never say never. I have never been asked so I wouldn't know whether I would say yes or no. If I did do it, it would certainly have to be the right thing. I'm not holding out for that. It would obviously change the way I work and the way I live and I'm quite happy with what I do at the moment so it would have to be a very good offer."

He continued: "There have been so many rumours. How many jobs can one person do? To be honest with you, I thought that the McQueen thing was a little in bad taste with the circumstances surrounding that. Other than the inappropriateness of it, it is vaguely flattering but obviously the inappropriateness did rather take over."

And it sounds like he didn't necessarily feel qualified for the McQueen job: "I met [McQueen] a couple of times but I didn't know him as a person, I never worked with him. They obviously have a very specific way of working there — and Sarah Burton obviously worked with him for a long, long time and to be given that role and responsibility is a tough one. To step into those shoes, I'm not jealous of that situation at all, I don't envy her position. It's flattering but I think a little ill-founded."

Gareth Pugh to Show Next Womenswear Collection in Italy — for Pitti W

>> Next January, Gareth Pugh will show for the first time in Italy — as part of the womenswear trade show Pitti W in Florence, which runs Jan.

>> Next January, Gareth Pugh will show for the first time in Italy — as part of the womenswear trade show Pitti W in Florence, which runs Jan. 11 through 14.

Pugh will create a collection specifically for the event — his spokesman said he recently visited Florence and had his eye on a central venue but hadn't yet decided on whether he'll show in runway or video format. This is a one-time thing for the designer — Pugh follows in the footsteps of Haider Ackermann, Giles Deacon, Diane von Furstenberg, Giambattista Valli, and Proenza Schouler and will continue to show during Paris Fashion Week.

Lapo Cianchi, communications and events director of Pitti Immagine, said Pugh's choice to stage a video presentation during Paris Fashion Week in October was part of the reason he was chosen to participate: "We have followed his work in London and Paris, seen his style evolve — from the Gothic atmospheres of the early days to today’s decidedly flamboyant effects — as well as the way he presents his collections: the video screened at the last Paris Fashion Week brought new energy to the discussion on the use of multimedia technologies in fashion. So we had all the right reasons for inviting Gareth Pugh to Florence and Pitti, where there is plenty of space for fashion experiments which can dialogue with the city’s unique historical and artistic venues. We are very happy that Gareth Pugh responded to our invitation with such enthusiasm."

Sheer Gowns and Masks Aplenty at Vogue Paris's 90th Anniversary Ball

>> Carine Roitfeld's masquerade ball last night, celebrating 90 years of Vogue Paris and loosely Eyes Wide Shut-themed, meant lots of sheer gowns, and lots of show attendees preoccupied with finding a mask yesterday.

>> Carine Roitfeld's masquerade ball last night, celebrating 90 years of Vogue Paris and loosely Eyes Wide Shut-themed, meant lots of sheer gowns, and lots of show attendees preoccupied with finding a mask yesterday. Anna Dello Russo, inspired by Lady Gaga, paired a Gareth Pugh headpiece with her custom Emilio Pucci gown. Jean Paul Gaultier designed a metal mask for himself adorned with long feathers: "Yes, they're giant eyelashes, acting like hair -- since I'm missing some as you can see — so instead I've gone for this black plume."

Tyra Banks made do with cut up fishnets, Sasha Pivovarova got her mask "from a sex shop," and Lily Donaldson wore a red tulle veil to match her Christian Dior gown: “I made it myself. I went all the way up to the fabric district in Montmartre today.” Stephen Jones made Karlie Kloss's star spangled mask to go with her Christian Dior gown, and Riccardo Tisci did Mariacarla Boscono's over the top feathered hat, while he looked to Philip Treacy to custom make his mask.

While there was plenty of mask ogling, Carine Roitfeld was more preoccupied with other thoughts. “Oh my goodness, even the models are eating, it’s amazing!” she laughed, as Lily Donaldson took a leaf from a chocolate cabbage.

Gareth Pugh's Surprise Spring 2011 Video Presentation Left Many Wishing They Could Have Seen the Clothes Better

>> Yesterday, just like he did for Fall 2009, Gareth Pugh surprised press and retailers with a film in place of a runway show.

>> Yesterday, just like he did for Fall 2009, Gareth Pugh surprised press and retailers with a film in place of a runway show. Pugh, who collaborated again with Ruth Hogben on the 11-minute film featuring Kristen McMenamy, said that he was searching for a runway alternative because: “With a show, a lot rides on that very small amount of time and the whole thing comes down to image. If a model trips or has a problem with shoes, that is the thing that endures. It is liberating for a designer not to have to worry about a show. You can get the models to be even more expressive and do it all in a more concise way.”

Suzy Menkes notes that "the feeling persists that backing off from a runway show is a cop-out or a sign of weakness." Pugh says he is aware of "the perception . . . that people aren’t willing to accept something else [besides a runway show],” and distributed a lookbook of the clothes at the end of the presentation as “a way not to scare people off."

The lack in ability to see the clothes at the presentation was a complaint from a number of attendees, however. WWD wrote: "The film wasn’t really a presentation of Pugh’s clothes, but a presentation of his presentation . . . The imagery was heavily manipulated, so judgment on the clothes was withheld until the classic runway shots arrived, showing what looked like a great collection with a lot to offer commercially." The Los Angeles Times's Booth Moore Tweeted: "Why do we watch runway shows live? Because you can't see the clothes on film. Sorry Gareth, that didn't cut it." The International Herald Tribune's Jessica Michault Tweeted: "Is it just me or did that Gareth Pugh video look just like the last one he did a year ago?" And the Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley Tweeted: Gareth pugh is a film. Beyond art house. Can't see much of the clothes, but it's sterile and dark."

Style.com's Tim Blanks didn't seem to mind the format, however: "What Hogben's film highlighted was the fluidity and movement inherent in Pugh's clothing. A runway could never have done that—nor could the lookbook images that were circulated after the screening."

>> Gareth Pugh Denies Move to Thierry Mugler —With Thierry Mugler reportedly looking to relaunch his womenswear brand, Gareth Pugh's name came up in June as a prospective candidate for the job. Now, however, Pugh says of the Mugler rumors: “There is no truth to them at all. Rumors are rumors. It’s not going to happen.” Nicola Formichetti was also rumored to have scored the gig, but there's been no confirmation from his camp either way. [WWD]
