The 15-piece collection included such items as an overcoat made from a windsurf sail, a jacket composed of baseball mitts, and a sleeveless jacket that used a crystal doorknob found in New York City as its fastener. Raf Simons, who started the week with his debut Couture collection for Dior, was seated in the front row at the show, leading many in the audience to believe that Margiela himself would make an appearance (the two are said to be good friends). But Margiela never showed his face . . . nor did the models who walked the runway, with their heads obscured by crystal-studded masks. The high-concept design in this collection stayed — literally — close to head and heart. Below the waist, most of the models wore pants cut from raw cotton or simple lace.

Update: H&M confirmed Tuesday that rumors of a collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela are true, and said that a collection of accessories and ready-to-wear for men and women will be sold in H&M stores around the world and online starting Nov. 15.
"Maison Martin Margiela is one of the most important and influential fashion houses of the past three decades," said H&M creative advisor Margareta van den Bosch. "I am so excited by this radical collaboration, which will give fashion lovers around the world the chance to wear special pieces by Maison Martin Margiela. This collaboration will be a great and memorable fashion moment."
The French fashion house, which always speaks in the collective "we," issued a statement saying, "The democracy of our fashion has always been at the center of our creativity, and the collaboration with H&M allows us to push this instinct further. We will bring together the contrasting universes of the two houses in ways that will surprise all."
The Swedish retailer tweeted the announcement with a link to a video of a hand sketching a women's sweater. It added later, "Of course @MMM_Official with H&M collection includes menswear!" with a link to a picture of the same hand sketching a men's car coat. Take a look at both below.

But first, those interesting ideas: turtlenecks that covered models' faces, and dresses and skirts that looked like someone took scissors to a kimono and then stitched it all back together. It still managed to feel clean and precise, perhaps another reference to Japan.
