Theyskens' Theory Gives You the Skin of the Future For Fall 2013

It was about the future at Theyskens' Theory's Fall 2013 show, from the minimalist clothing to the clean, fresh skin.

It was about the future at Theyskens' Theory's Fall 2013 show, from the minimalist clothing to the clean, fresh skin. Designer Olivier Theyskens worked with James Kaliardos for MAC to execute the woman of the future, putting the focus on a diffused, lit-from-within complexion. The hair, by Kérastase's Odile Gilbert, felt equally polished and yet untouched, with strands slicked back into a headband for a cool waterfall effect. Curious to see what we'll all look like in 2013? Well, check out our video now.

Avoiding the Plague: How Fashion's Finest Survive Flu Season

How Fashion People Fight Cold and Flu Season

It's been said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and some of the industry's biggest names seem to take that old adage to heart. More than one attendee of last night's opening dinner for the WWD CEO Summit told us that staying active is the best way to stave off sickness.

"I exercise a lot because I like to do Iron Man triathlons," Elettra Wiedemann said, "so I feel like my immune system is generally kind of boosted by all the exercise."

When we asked Theory CEO Andrew Rosen how he stays healthy, he said simply, "I go to the gym every day."

What other methods do fashion people use to stay healthy — or get well again — when cold and flu season strikes? The answers here in the gallery.

Theyskens' Theory Pre-Fall 2013

Most designers don't try to reinvent the wheel with their Pre-Fall collections, but Olivier Theyskens isn't most designers.

Most designers don't try to reinvent the wheel with their Pre-Fall collections, but Olivier Theyskens isn't most designers. So even though he said he "wanted everything to feel really essential" in his most recent Theyskens' Theory collection, that sentiment didn't stop him from being a little forward thinking.

Take for example, the multifunctional pieces here, like a jacket and miniskirt that combine to look like a belted coat, or a white poplin shirt long enough to be worn as a dress. (Theyskens instead showed the shirt tucked into a white A-line skirt.)

Elsewhere, fine-tuned basics dominated, like a slim-sleeve raglan sweatshirt, a dress made of denim, and several pairs of trousers cropped at the ankle. A subtle tartan added a flair to a trench coat and some shirts. Otherwise, the only print was one inspired by one of the essential things that holds New York City together: scaffolding.

A Behind-the-Seams Look at Olivier Theyskens's Spring 2013 Show

Olivier Theyskens's Spring 2013 collection for Theyskens' Theory was filled with softness and light — but that doesn't mean it was any easier to create than his other clothing.

Olivier Theyskens's Spring 2013 collection for Theyskens' Theory was filled with softness and light — but that doesn't mean it was any easier to create than his other clothing. A behind-the-scenes video shot by Theyskens's friend Olivier Bourdon reveals the labor-intensive processes of designing garments, styling runway looks, and prepping models — sometimes sewing the clothes right onto them. A look at how it all came together in the video below.

  • Olivier Theyskens says the key to his success has been realizing when things need to change. "A designer's first collection may have a lot of success because it's all about prints, but the person must have the courage, if prints are not really what he or she wants to do their entire design life, to find a way to get rid of it, to discover how to develop other things," he said. Theyskens' Theory Resort 2013

Olivier Theyskens's considerable talent for matching slouch with sleek was in full effect for Resort 2013. Among this season's standouts? A relaxed, cape-back jumpsuit with draped waist ties and a chiffon-sleeved minidress, the body of which was covered hem to hilt in sequins textured to shimmer like the skin of some exotic fish. While the details — a psychedelic oil-spill print here, a smattering of irridescent feathers there — lent a vaguely subversive spin, the palette of black, gray, and wine kept everything on the easy-wearing citified side. After all, "Resort is really about essentials that speak to modern life," the designer explained.
